Sperm whale: This species is the largest of the odontocetes, as it is equal to the whales in size. Its gigantic head, its dark striated skin and its small dorsal fin stand out. Apnea for more than an hour to search for food more than 2,000 meters deep. It is more common to see them in spring. Weight: 15-60 tons. Size: 11-18 meters.

More info…

Physeter macrocephalus, also known as the sperm whale, is the world’s largest species of toothed whale. It is a marine mammal found in all waters of the world, although they prefer the deep, warm waters of the tropical and subtropical oceans. Males can reach a length of up to 18 metres and a weight of up to 57 tonnes, while females are generally smaller.

The sperm whale is characterised by its enormously large head and distinctive barrel body shape. Its head accounts for up to one third of the total body length and contains the spermaceti organ, which is believed to be used for echolocation and communication. Spermaceti is a waxy, oily substance found in the male’s head that has been highly valued by humans throughout history for its luminous and lubricating properties.

These cetaceans are known to be extreme divers, and can dive to depths of more than 2,000 metres and remain underwater for up to 90 minutes. They feed mainly on giant squid and other cephalopods, but can also consume fish and sharks.

The sperm whale was heavily hunted commercially for many years, mainly for its spermaceti and oil, resulting in significant population declines. Although commercial hunting of the sperm whale has declined, the species continues to face significant threats, including ocean pollution, climate change and incidental capture in fishing nets. The species is considered “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Pilot whale: It is morphologically very similar to the tropical pilot whale, but it differs in the gray color of its skin (almost white in some adult specimens) and the contrast with the dorsal fin, which is still dark. Weight: 300-600 kg.

More info…

Grampus griseus, also known as the Risso’s dolphin, is a species of dolphin found in deep, temperate waters around the world. It is a member of the family Delphinidae and is one of the largest dolphins, measuring up to 4 metres in length and weighing up to 600 kg.

The Risso’s dolphin is dark grey on top and white or light grey underneath. It has a large, bulbous head with a distinctive dorsal crest extending from the back of the head to the base of the dorsal fin. The dolphin also has a long, narrow beak with sharp teeth.

These dolphins are highly social and are often found in groups that can range from a few individuals to more than 50. They are known for their acrobatic behaviour and are often seen leaping and spinning in the air.

Risso’s dolphins feed mainly on squid and deep-sea fish, and are very effective predators in the water. However, like many other cetacean species, it is threatened by bycatch, pollution and habitat disturbance.

Although hunted in the past for their meat and oil, this practice has greatly diminished today. However, the species is still considered “near threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to a lack of population data and continuing threats to its habitat and survival.

The length in males is 13.7 m and in females 14.5 m, with a maximum length of 15 m. The back is dark bluish gray to metallic gray, with lighter flanks and pale throat and belly.

More info…

Balaenoptera edeni, also known as Bryde’s or Bryde’s whale, is a species of baleen whale found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. It is one of the smallest whales of the genus Balaenoptera, with an average length of 12-14 metres and a weight of 13-23 tonnes.

The Bryde’s whale has a long, slender body with a small, narrow head. Their colouring varies from dark grey to grey-brown, and they have a series of throat folds that expand when feeding. They feed on a variety of prey, including krill, small crustaceans and fish.

These whales are solitary animals or are found in pairs, but are known to gather in feeding groups where there is a large amount of prey. They are often seen jumping and performing acrobatics out of the water.

Is an endangered species due to commercial hunting in the past, as well as bycatch in fishing nets and ocean pollution. The species is also vulnerable to declining prey availability due to overfishing. Conservation efforts, including bans on commercial hunting and the creation of marine protected areas, have helped stabilise fin whale populations in some areas.
